In this second episode I will continue to talk about the gift of compassion and how it helps me to work these steps in the normal course of living life. What happened to me was a huge loss of self-importance. Many people who are representatives of the so-called “new age” religions, or, maybe I should say new age spirituality, are proponents of the ego having an actual presence and personality in our lives. This is not true. The ego is not a thing. It is a “construct”, originated by Sigmund Freud, and latched onto in an inordinate way, by many professionals and self-proclaimed spiritualists. What is described as the ego is simply a way of explaining our behavior and natural tendency of self-protection. It does not control us nor is it able to control us. It is used to describe either our self-protective, or sometimes aberrant behaviors. The gift of compassion allows us to keep what is called the ego in check. This gift also allows us to get out of ourselves and consider the plight of others. We receive the gift of compassion as a result, (one of the many results), of what the original steps called “this course of action”, and now referred to as the “steps”.
