Kansa Vadham—the slaying of the tyrant Kansa by Krishna—forms the central theme of Dashakam 75 of Narayaneeyam. This episode marks the culmination of Krishna’s divine mission in Mathura, symbolizing the triumph of dharma over adharma.

Upon entering Mathura, Krishna and Balarama confront numerous challenges orchestrated by Kansa, including defeating the mighty elephant Kuvalayapeeda and the renowned wrestlers Chanura and Mushtika. The narrative reaches its climax when an enraged Kansa calls for the deaths of Krishna, Balarama, Vasudeva, Ugrasena, and other well-wishers. Before Kansa can execute his violent orders, Krishna leaps onto Kansa’s dais, seizes him by the hair, and kills him by hurling him to the floor of the arena.

Krishna then drags Kansa’s body for everyone to see, signifying the restoration of justice and the end of oppression in Mathura. Although Kansa feared Krishna throughout his life, the text notes that this constant remembrance of the Lord, even in fear, grants him liberation at death. Krishna then releases his parents, Vasudeva and Devaki, restores Ugrasena to the throne, and fulfills the desires of the Yadava clan, highlighting his role as protector and restorer of righteousness.

Thus, Kansa Vadham in Narayaneeyam stands for divine justice, the protection of devotees, and the inevitable downfall of tyranny through unwavering faith in the Lord.
