This episode serves as the culminating chapter of the Rama Avatāra narrative within the Narayaneeyam, weaving together the climactic events of Lord Rama’s mission and imparting a profound spiritual lesson on attachment and detachment.
Rama’s alliance with Sugrīva, secured through Hanumān’s valor, sets the stage for the liberation of the monkeys’ kingdom and the rescue of Sītā.
The epic battles in Laṅkā unfold in rapid succession:
The breach of the ocean via the bridge of stones, Rama’s advance and encounter with Laṅkā’s princes
Lakṣmaṇa’s near–death and revival by Hanumān’s Sanjeevanī herb
The slaying of Kumbhakarṇa and the defeat of Indrajit
The final duel in which Rama vanquishes Rāvaṇa with the Brahmāstra
Following victory, Rama welcomes Sītā—proved pure by fire—and returns to Ayodhyā in the Pushpaka Vīmāna alongside Vibheeshana and the rejuvenated monkey hosts.
Rama’s joyful rule spans millennia, yet is marred by societal suspicion regarding Sītā’s chastity.
Pressured by public scandal, Rama reluctantly sends the pregnant Sītā into exile; she finds refuge in Sage Vālmīki’s āśrama, where she bears Lava and Kuśa.
Rama ultimately relinquishes his mortal form, entering the Sarayu River and ascending to Vaikuṇṭha.
The tenth and final śloka distills the didactic purpose of Rama’s human incarnation:
“This mortal Avatāra was ordained solely to teach that excessive attachment to desires or to dharma itself brings anguish in parting and causes innocent suffering. If this were not true—oh wielder of the discus—how could your divine mind, ever full of joy, know sorrow? O Lord of Guruvayūr, heal my ills!”
