The story of the Syamantaka gem (Shyamantakam) in the Narayaneeyam, particularly in Dasakam 80, centers around a precious jewel given by the sun-god Surya to King Satrājit as a token of favor. This jewel had the magical ability to produce abundant gold daily, making Satrājit wealthy. When Satrājit wore the gem in Dwaraka, people mistook him for the sun-god due to the gem’s brilliance.

Later, rumors spread that Lord Krishna wanted the jewel, and when Satrājit's relative Prasena went missing with it, some accused Krishna falsely of being involved in Prasena’s death. In truth, the jewel caused a series of ordeals. Krishna went on a quest to clear his name, which included battling a lion and Jāmbavān, who had taken the jewel.

Eventually, Krishna returned the gem to Satrājit and handed the jewel back to him, despite Satrājit’s guilt for initially offending Krishna by not giving him the gem. To atone, Satrājit gave Krishna not just the jewel but also his daughter Satyabhama in marriage. The story illustrates the futility of material wealth and the supremacy of divine grace, as Krishna demonstrated that true treasure lies beyond mere possessions.

This episode in Narayaneeyam shows Krishna's role as a protector of his honor and the divine order, highlights themes of devotion, misunderstandings, and redemption through divine intervention
