Why is money such a challenging issue in relationships?

Being in a relationship involves more than just dating and having fun. At some point, couples need to discuss serious issues, including their financial situation. Unfortunately, money can be a difficult topic to broach in relationships. It's easy to talk about light things like food and entertainment, or even more serious topics like future plans and beliefs. However, for some reason, even long-term couples find it hard to talk about money. This challenge can persist even after marriage.
