Dr. Melanie Welch is a medical doctor and coach on a journey of pushing herself just a little bit out of her comfort zone each day. She hosts the podcast Unmaking Me with Melanie Welch, MD, which explores topics such as shame, vulnerability, judgment, and putting ourselves out there even when we're messy and imperfect.
Melanie was a successful doctor but realized she lived based on societal "shoulds." She was drawn to do something else but was guilty and ashamed at the thought of straying from the expected path. With Brene Brown's research as a foundation, Melanie began understanding shame and how to work through it. She found that vulnerability and genuine connection were the answer to judgment and that resilience was essential but not the goal. Through her cat, Melanie learned to honor her feelings to make her life richer. She realized that she could still practice medicine while acknowledging all the parts of herself and that it was ok to adjust in relation to her inner voice.
In this episode, you will learn the following:
1. How Can Shame Lead to Connection?
2. What Does Self-Compassion Have to Do With Our Pressure to Live Up to External Standards?
3. How Can We Achieve a Balance Between Resilience and Processing Emotions?
