Summer Replay | She Did Cancel Culture

I want to be totally honest here, there was a good 24 hour period where I worried this episode was a mistake. I kept thinking over and over: what if it happens again? I know Beth and I were both feeling it, the fear that online bullies thrive on. I knew this story was important, I knew that in telling it we were taking back power. I knew this community would give Beth something she needed: empathy, compassion, and an outpouring of love and support. Beth went through one of the most bizarre, and terrifying cancelations I’ve ever heard of. She was terrorized by a contingency of people who wanted to destroy her. Our listeners were both shocked and baffled by the circumstances. I’m not going to lie: I struggle with the lesson here. In Beth’s humility she speaks to it, but as a friend it angers me. No one should have to go through this. As a mother it also is such an awakening to what kids experience online, and the importance of protecting and educating them. Man oh man. The toxicity of cancel culture, the accessibility of bullies to be shrouded and hide on the internet. The way some sad souls will go out of their way to cause pain and misery. It’s all here.
