On this episode of Shaping Success with Wes Tankersley, Wes talks to Robert Watson, a returned guest, about his upcoming book Ars Victoris: What Makes Life Better.  It comes out the first week of February.

Robert and Wes discuss how people cannot accept failures. The reality is failures are necessary before achieving success.  There are lessons with every failure that help people learn.  In today’s society, failures are not accepted. Everyone gets a participation trophy, so success is not appreciated like it once was.

Robert recounts his days playing basketball and how his coach motivated him to do better by humiliating him. The mindset in those days is second place is the first loser. The coach did and said things that aren’t accepted today, but for Robert, humiliation was a great motivator.

Arnold Schwarzenegger said in his book Be Useful that there is no such thing as a self-made man. Robert and Wes discuss this thought recounting their football days in high school. Both talk about how adjustments were made in the game according to the skill set of the player.  The game is a team effort, and success depends on the how the other players execute their responsibilities. Robert is thankful for the guards and wide receivers that blocked and helped other teammates.

Robert says his life is not interesting, but the people he’s met along the way are amazing. This includes his training instructors. To train properly is to strategize, to achieve the abilities needed, and fearless execution. The key is to get trained by people who actually did the task. Life coaches and people who only read about how to do something won’t’ cut it.

Some advice given by Robert is to declutter life so one can accomplish what he can. He says to do 5 things needing done as early as possible to make the day a success. Control what can be controlled and what is 3 feet in front. It’s important to be gradual in starting the process of achieving a goal. If a person wants to run 3 miles, they should start with a half a mile first. People are responsible for their own reaction to a situation. No one else is.

Robert discusses dating apps and how they set people up for failure. They are monetized for one’s failure. The model is to stay on
