This Labor Day Weekend, Scottsdale is trading palm trees for cowboy hats as the Arizona Invitational Black Rodeo rides into town on August 29th and 30th. This isn’t your ordinary rodeo—it’s two days packed with bull riding, barrel racing, roping events, mutton bustin’, and a whole lot of grit, grit, and more grit.
But beyond the excitement in the arena, this event also shines a spotlight on the history and contributions of Black cowboys and cowgirls, making it a celebration that’s as educational as it is entertaining. Joining me today is Lanette Campbell, the driving force behind the event, to talk about what makes this rodeo such a unique experience for Scottsdale and the Southwest.
