His impressive credentials earned him an appointment as Senate-confirmed Assistant Secretary for Employment and Training at the US Department of Labor, where he previously served as Special Assistant to the Assistant Secretary for Administration and Management and then Deputy Assistant Secretary in the Mine Safety and Health Administration (MSHA). Before that, John was Executive Director of Kentucky’s Office of Employment and Training. With a passion for education reform, he also worked for Michelle Rhee’s Students First as the Director of Implementation and later Human Resources Director. An alumnus of The Ohio State University, John is an Illinois native who has risen to the top in his field through hard work, dedication, and commitment
