A conversation with Richard Cox, great-great-grandson of William Cox, who built the first road over Australia's Blue Mountains, from Sydney to Bathurst.
Cox built the road with a team of 30 hand-picked convicts, whom he treated well. Cox shared their difficult conditions and most of the convicts received their freedom, in one form or another, following the road's completion.
A full account of this remarkable undertaking can be found in Richard Cox's book, 'William Cox: Blue Mountains Road Builder and Pastoralist' (Rosenberg Publishing).
