In this episode, chat with Navy Capt. (ret) and former Public Affairs Officer Thurraya Kent. She's successfully made the transition from 26 years serving in the military to now running Blue Magnolia Engagement Strategies, an event planning and homestyle catering company based in northern Virginia.
Her military assignments included Special Assistant for Public Affairs to the Assistant Secretary of the Navy (Research, Development, and Acquisition); Commanding Officer of Navy Public Affairs Support Element; and Public Affairs Officer for the USS Dwight D. Eisenhower (CVN 69) and Carrier Strike Group EIGHT. Her last active duty assignment was as the U.S. Navy’s Deputy Chief of Information.
A fierce advocate for mentoring others, she was part of a team that spearheaded the Navy public affairs mentoring program. She's also a lifetime member of the Girl Scouts of the United States of America, the Military Officers of America Association, the National Naval Officers Association, and Zeta Phi Beta Sorority, Inc. In 2005, Ms. Kent’s military family was the inspiration for the United States Senate Bill S.487, which amended Title 10 of the United States Code, to grant military members paid leave in connection with adopting children.
