"You are in control. It's your world." These powerful words from Marine and motivational speaker Max Dutton cut straight to the heart of what makes his work with teenagers so transformative. In this compelling conversation with hosts Judy Zelfikar and Niren McLean, Max reveals how his journey from childhood trauma to purposeful leadership has equipped him to connect authentically with youth at pivotal moments in their development.

Max takes us behind the scenes of the Rotary Youth Leadership Awards (RYLA) camps, where approximately 450 high school juniors experience a life-changing weekend retreat each year. Unlike his typical speaking engagements where connection is brief, the three-day immersion allows Max to witness remarkable transformations as teenagers drop their carefully constructed walls and discover they aren't alone in their struggles. "They want to win in life," Max explains, "they want to succeed in whatever that looks like."

The power of Max's approach lies in his authenticity. Having survived an abusive childhood with parents struggling with addiction, he made conscious choices different from what he witnessed growing up. He shares a particularly moving story about a young woman desperate to make friends, who broke down in tears when Max asked her simply: "Why does it matter?" This question sparked a profound realization about authenticity versus social validation. As Max advises, "Be yourself and don't do it for the likes. Do what you like, then your audience will come."

At 32, Max bridges the generational gap between teenagers and older mentors, offering perspective on "what happens next" while maintaining relatable energy. His message emphasizes personal agency: "Your environment does not define you unless you allow it to." He illustrates how small choices compound over time, like a plane changing course by just one degree eventually ending up thousands of miles from its destination.

This episode isn't just about youth mentorship—it's about discovering purpose through pain and understanding that we're never finished growing. "A finished musician is a finished musician," Max notes, encouraging listeners to continue bettering themselves because "there might be a guy who needs you tomorrow."
