Written 9/16/2025.

As we head into the fourth quarter, the busiest time of year for me and my business, I thought I’d do a mental health check in.

First, I’m in a good place overall.

I have a routine down that works for me. I lift weights twice a week and go to yoga once a week. I dance once a week. I try to get out on the motorcycle several times a week.

If I need to meet people, I can usually find a meetup group that works. Heck, every Friday night at Quigley’s pub is game night, so that’s pretty cool.

Robert’s Substack is a reader-supported publication. To receive new posts and support my work, consider becoming a free or paid subscriber.

Dating life is good and frustrating at the same time. I’m in that middle space, still establishing a relationship with nothing set in “stone.” I love certainty and definitely don’t have it. Luckily, I’m older, a little wiser, and willing to have some patience.

I’ve found that I do need other outlets, so I plan my life like I’ve always done and if a dating interest wants to come along, then they are welcome to. Lately I think I’ve been trying too hard, so need to get on with my life.

I keep repeating the mantra that you can’t lose what’s meant for you. That goes for “the one.” This has helped me not stress out so much.

My focus over the next 4 months will be my main business - benefits/health insurance for companies and some individuals/Medicare (see slaytonins.com). My book and signature speech will need to wait until January.

I will keep writing these blogs as I can. I love writing and it’s yet one more thing I do to manage my mental health.

Dancing is pure bliss. The joy and anticipation I get while driving to the dance is amazing and I wish I could share it.

Riding motorcycles reduces my anxiety and cortisol while increasing my serotonin. During 4th quarter, this is really important.

Yoga helps me focus and prevents injuries. The instructor is great.

I didn’t mention prayer. I pray all the time. I’ve made it a habit that if I see particular numbers on the clock or other places (e.g. odometer or speedometer), I’ll say a quick prayer. Numbers such as 11:11, 1:11, 2:22, 1:23, or the speedometer - 44.4 mph. I usually end up praying at least 5 to 10 times. I’ve also incorporated praying for everyone in the world (yes, that includes you who is reading this post).

Bible study every Thursday morning. Being in a community of men I’ve known for years is comforting.

Thanks for reading Robert’s Substack! This post is public so feel free to share it.

In summary, every week I do things that I love. I try to plan them into my schedule so that I have something to look forward to. This has really helped my mental health and minimized any mild depression I may occasionally have.

What do you plan into your week that gives you happiness and joy? How has it helped you in your life? I’d love to know.

As always, I love you,

Robert
