Kaley Jones: A Leap of Faith

#49:  At 19 years old Kaley Jones’ (she/her) life came to a crossroads: on one path, she could move down to Mexico and continue a life that was gripped by substance use disorder and incredibly dangerous circumstances; or she could begin the long and hard journey of sobriety; an existence that not only seemed impossible, but one she didn’t think she wanted. 

Over 10 years later, Kaley says that starting that journey into sobriety was stepping into the fullest form of her human existence. It has been tough work, even grueling at times, but she’s reclaimed the life she thought she wasn’t worthy of at 19, and she’s so grateful she listened to her loved ones and took the leap of faith. We discuss Kaley’s story and more: 

• A full circle realization- now Kaley works with people who are the same age she was when she got sober.  She shows them that there is hope...  and she’s proof of it!
• Kaley's definition of recovery as her relation to the community she has invested love into, and they have invested their love into her. It’s the group of people that honor her authentic self and encourage her to grow and change.
• How looking back, she’s so glad her family held an intervention at 19, because it gave her the opportunity to avoid many more years of suffering.
• Kaley doesn’t view recovery in relation to what she’s avoiding, rather it’s about what she’s leaning into and what life is now offering her.
• The importance of community in early sobriety; providing evidence that there is a version of everyone that can live and thrive in recovery.
• Kaley’s first introduction to The Phoenix: how after leaving the safety of treatment and the support it offered, she doubted she could live a thriving life in sobriety until she met someone wearing a “sober” shirt at a 12-step meeting.
