Naturopathy or naturopathic medicine was brought to America from Germany in the 1800s. Although some of its treatments are a couple of centuries older than that, modern naturopathy combines traditional therapies with some aspects of contemporary medicine. Conventional and naturopathic medicine are pretty similar; the main difference is that naturopathy focuses on prevention rather than fighting symptoms.
Joining me today is Dr. Sheldon Bjorgaard; he is a Naturopathic doctor at Arc Integrated Medicine - Delta & Surrey Naturopathic Doctors. Dr. Sheldon holds a Bachelor of Science in Biology/Biological Sciences from the University of the Fraser Valley. He is also a Certified Doctor of Naturopathic Medicine from the Boucher Institute of Naturopathic Medicine. He works primarily to help people get better metabolic health and as a weight loss coach for prediabetics and Type 2 diabetics.
In this episode, we talked about the definition of naturopathic medicine and how he understands the relationship between losing weight and overall health. He kindly shared the principles of weight management and the pros and cons of intermittent fasting. We also talked about the misconceptions around reversing and curing diabetes, and he also explained the difference between prediabetes and Type 1 and Type 2 diabetes.
