Chapter 10 – Powerful Principles of Influence & Greatness
The number one need of all mankind is so powerful that even newborn infants have been known to physically perish when deprived of it. Despite age, background, gender or position in life, everyone desires what I like to call, “Necessary Significance”. From birth to death, we are all in pursuit of finding our place in society. We desire to be accepted, appreciated, valued and recognized for our contributions to the world.
As children, we run to our parents and proudly show them our attempts at gymnastics, coloring or art. Later in childhood and into our teens, we want to impress our peers by showing off, in both good and bad ways. However, the goal is always to same, we want others to recognize and appreciate us for what we can offer to the world. Even as adults, we strive for a better career, higher position, nicer house, car or anything that gives us a sense of achievement. Finally, in the winter of our lives, we cherish and seek after the relationships of loved ones, ever longing for their presence near us. We hold tightly to fond memories and live for visits, phone calls and cards or letters to remind us that we still matter.
In working with leaders and teams, I often emphasize these facts because it is the most powerful principle in creating a culture where people can thrive:
Teams develop strong loyalty when they know they are valued and what their expectations are. They want recognition for their gifts, talents and experience. They also want opportunities to contribute to the success of a business. When appreciated with a clear vision of their objectives, most teams will go well beyond expectations in performance.
This is also true in families, in communities and in all people groups. Necessary Significance is the key to influence. However, you cannot give to others what you do not have for yourself. If you are still struggling with unforgiveness (Chapter 6); or you have not worked on your heart and mind to develop a powerful, confident and compassionate inner dialogue (Chapters 1-4); or if you have not developed the right heart energy (Chapter 5), you will not be able to authentically practice the characteristics of influence.
