Is it Possible to Be "Addicted" To Negativity?

1.      NEGATIVE ADDICTIONS:

From the statistics, science and insights in the previous chapters, you should grasp the understanding of how critically important it is that we practice caution every day, in what we feed our minds and hearts. 

All Addictions carry the same characteristics. Whether it’s the blings and dings of social media notifications or addictions to drugs, alcohol, pornography, sugar, etc., they all produce a chemical reaction that creates a false sense of comfort or pleasure. Despite being short-lived and destructive to our livelihood, we constantly crave these “empty” pleasures.

Negative addictions are no different. When we listen to or participate in gossip, news programs or discussions that focus on the downfalls or tragedies of others, in a crazy, sick way it somehow makes us feel like we are better, smarter or more privileged. This thought process produces the same “feel good” chemical reaction in us as dopamine, oxytocin, serotonin or endorphins. 

We can also become addicted to negative attention, which sometimes happens after we suffer some sort of tragedy or struggle. In the beginning, we appreciate the outpouring of love and attention, which is critical and life giving during these times in life. If not careful, we can become dependent on these responses leading us to subconsciously, create negative mindsets that crave more of this type of attention rather than working toward rising above it.

In all cases of negative addictions, we must ask ourselves some important questions and get very honest about our answers concerning negative addictions:

·        Are they benefiting me?

·        Is focusing on them the best use of my time?

·        What affects are they having on me? On my family? On my future?

·        Will remaining in them move me closer to my destiny or away from it?

·        If I do not deal with them now, will I have regrets later in life?
