For years, athletes have trained their subconscious through visualizaiton They are asked to visualize themselves competing in the sport of their choice, in their minds eye only, while hooked up to monitors. They must engage emotions, thoughts, feelings and other senses, i.e. sights, sounds, smells, feelings and even the outcome they desire.
These devices track their vital signs as well as their nerves and muscles. Amazingly, their vitals and muscle fibers react as if they were actually playing the sport itself. Study after study proves that the performance of an athlete improves vastly and consistently with this type of visualization.
Another example to consider is how your body reacts when you watch a horror movie or love story. Your heart rate speeds up; you may sweat, tense up or even cry. All because your thoughts are aligning with what is played on the screen. This type of scientific study concluded that the subconscious mind does not know the difference between an imagined event and an actual event.
The New England Journal of Medicine cites a case of placebo knee surgery involving 165 patients with osteoarthritis. These patients were randomly divided into separate groups set to undergo different procedures to study the results of each. Each group provided consent to participate in this study. We will call them Groups A and B.
Group A would have standard knee surgery. Group B would have placebo knee surgery in which 3 incisions, 1cm long, were made in the knee and then stitched up but no procedure was done. Patients in both groups were monitored for 24 months, collecting data in 3-month intervals. The results were conclusive indicating both groups experienced full recovery of the knee disorder.
This study and multitudes of others reveal that what you perceive in your subconscious is the dominating factor in the outcome. Therefore, utilizing this knowledge as you pursue new habits and develop your success routine can only help. Realize that you are designed to succeed. You have the power to determine your outcome. All you have to do is tap into the resources you were born with.
