There are many reasons you may want to change jobs. And as much as you want to leave, actually doing is tough. Especially one where you make a great salary, have great benefits, have a big brand behind you and now for some, never have to go into the office again.
However, for those who are still thinking about leaving and feel stuck, here are 4 reasons holding you back from leaving and tips to work through each.
1. You have no idea what you want
The first thing that is keeping you at the job you hate is that you have no idea what you want. This is the thing that kept me stuck for so long. I knew that I didn’t want to be in my current job anymore but I had no idea what I wanted to do next.
Too many people who want to quit their job don’t have a next step planned. And if they do, it’s only half thought out. Let me explain.
If you aren’t happy in your job, must likely, you are looking for a job that improves upon the thing that is making you miserable.
Don’t like you team or boss? Well, moving to a new team or getting a new boss will do the trick. Don’t like that you travel a lot, or don’t like that you don’t travel at all? Well, switch to the opposite.
I mean this in no offense to anyone, but most people will look for the quick, easy solution to their problems. It’s like putting a band aid on the real problem.
I used to be no different.
When I was in audit, I hated the hours and that the work was so boring. The solution? Going into consulting where the work was always different!
When I was in consulting where I couldn’t do the travel anymore, what did I do? I went internal.
But when I was internal and couldn’t do the work as I wanted to make more of an impact, I finally decided to take a look at my career and figure out what I actually wanted – instead of just taking another job to check the box.
So, if you are unhappy and don’t know what you want, sit down, make a plan, and take the time out to figure it out.
2. You’re too busy
The second thing that is keeping you at the job you hate is that you’re too busy to look for another job. Sometimes we are too busy and things come up but to me, you spend time on things that you prioritize.
