This week's theme for the podcast is: Codependency

Codependency is something many People Pleasers & Perfectionists will struggle with, as well as many others within relationships used to mask & distract from other things in their lives. It's also one of the most common behaviors of those raised by narcissists or someone struggling with an addiction.

Here is some information & tips to overcome this struggle & be free of depending on others for validation!

Here are some notes from today's episode:

  • Codependency is an unhealthy focus on other people’s problems, feelings, and needs.
  • It’s also the extreme need to be dependent on others & feel wholly responsible for their feelings & actions.
  • A hallmark of those struggling with this is that approval from others is more important than respecting themself. Doing whatever they can for that person, while completely ignoring themself.
  • One of the reasons specifically it is unhealthy is because this focus will still be present, despite how negatively it impacts their mental & physical health & general personal well-being.
  • This will result in the interference of identity development. 
  • It’s like letting yourself become consumed in someone else’s life & not even knowing who you are after taking a step back. You’re basically a shell of a person.
  • People Pleasers & Perfectionists suffer greatly from being codependent because they are all about what others think about them & basing their worth off of those opinions,
  • There is also an outlook of them trying to save others from themselves, which also brings in the element of control over something & making themselves feel important to others.
  • Here are some traits of someone that struggles with codependency: obsessive worry over others, letting yourself become too involved in other’s drama, fear of making waves or rocking the boat, it’s easier for you to take care of others rather than yourself, and you probably struggle with guilt & shame.
  • There are many more signs that can determine someone struggling with codependency, which we will get into later in the week, but for today this is just an overview.
