How to Be Your Authentic Self - Authenticity is Freedom

I bet the person you're meant to be is more fun than the one you're pretending to be out of fear of judgment & negative opinions. It can be difficult to lean into our authentic selves, but you will feel so much freedom in being your true self. I got 5 tips that can help you be your authentic self!

Show Notes:
My goal for the last couple years is to be as real as possible. I have been working on becoming my true self & it hasn’t been easy. Pretending to be someone is also considered masking, where you be the person you need to be depending on the people you’re with & the experience you’re going through. It’s like protection because you are adapting to the situation so you can survive in every way.

But just surviving isn’t enough. We all need to be who we were created to be because that is what matters. And I know that being who you truly are is scary because you are fearful of the judgment that comes with it or how uncomfortable rejection is, the amount of loneliness that can come when you stop hanging out with people that aren’t the best influence and the awkwardness of trying to figure out what you actually enjoy & don’t enjoy. But the freedom you get when you ARE your true self is unmatched.

Authenticity is living your life being true to your personality, your personal values & beliefs & just being who you are despite what others think & say. Being authentic also means that you will be as honest & transparent as you can be. And not living your life with a victim mentality.

If you do not resonate with what I am saying right now & think that being a people pleaser IS you being authentic, then I challenge you to ask yourself this question: “How would I feel if I did something for myself that made me happy but made someone else upset?” If your answer is something like you would be really uncomfortable & wouldn’t do based on other people’s judgments, then you aren’t being authentic to yourself. 

Here are also some examples of someone that is authentic:

  • They don’t try hard to make other people like them
  • They don’t judge others
  • They express their true thoughts with others
  • They take time to self-reflect & work on themselves

But for those of us that know we are struggling with being authentic & who we were truly meant to be, here are 5 ways you can be more authentic & show up as your truest self:

  1. Be honest with yourself & others. 
  2. Work on self-awareness to understand yourself better. 
  3. Recognize what motivates you internally vs externally. 
  4. Recognize where you don’t have boundaries & create those. 
  5. Let go of your emotional crutches.
