Sean Comer, Benjamin J. Colon and Mark Radulich present their Spider-Man Movie Franchise 2002-2019 Review. In 1999 Sony Pictures Entertainment had acquired the film rights to Spider-Man. Sony Pictures created two film series. The first was the Sam Raimi Spider-Man trilogy of films (2002–2007) starring Tobey Maguire. The second was the series directed by Marc Webb, The Amazing Spider-Man films (2012 and 2014) starring Andrew Garfield.
In February 2015, Disney, Marvel Studios, and Sony made a deal to share the Spider-Man film rights. This lead to a new iteration of Spider-Man being introduced and integrated into the Marvel Cinematic Universe. The deal allowed Sony Pictures to continue to own, finance, distribute, and have final creative control of the solo Spider-Man films. Walt Disney Studios Motion Pictures distributed the films with his other appearances. Tom Holland portrays this version of Spider-Man, and has appeared in five films to date, from Captain America: Civil War (2016) to Spider-Man: Far From Home (2019).
