I planted two small cherry trees in the back garden.

I never told anyone what they were for.

But now I’ll say it: One was for my mother.

The other was for the daughter I never got to raise.

They cut both down in 2017. Didn’t even ask what they meant.  

The Daughter: Solene - She was never born. But I felt her.

I dreamed of a daughter before Mayte and I ever had Amiir.

Not as a fantasy—as a presence. She used to come to me in dreams.

Light hair. Wide eyes. Funny. Strong-willed. I always thought if we made it through the pain, we’d try again, and she’d come.

She didn’t.

But I still planted a tree for her.

Because some things, you don’t need the world to validate. You just know.

Some things don’t need a birth certificate to be real.
