Series: The Book of Philippians
Unity in Christ
Philippians 2:1-11
Maintaining unity in a church requires intentional effort by everyone.
If then there is any encouragement in Christ, if any consolation of love, if any fellowship with the Spirit, if any affection and mercy, 2 fulfill my joy by thinking the same way, having the same love, sharing the same feelings, focusing on one goal. 3 Do nothing out of rivalry or conceit, but in humility consider others as more important than yourselves. 4 Everyone should look out not only for his own interests, but also for the interests of others. 5 Make your own attitude that of Christ Jesus.
Philippians 2:1-5
Steps to Unity
1. Celebrate our common faith.
Unity is rarely threatened over core issues. It is usually undermined by tertiary issues.
Maturing Christians become proficient at theological triage.
2. Abandon selfish pursuits.
Human nature will always pull us toward our own preferences.
3. Prioritize the needs of others.
We must view others as people whom God loves.
“One another” love is a helpful outreach tool.
4. Imitate Jesus.
Our goal should be to reflect Jesus, not only in conduct, but also in character.
“Being like Jesus” is not the Gospel becauseno one can be enough like Jesus to be accepted by God.
Many believe verses 6-11 are a Christological hymn of the early church.
Sacrifice and humility are rewarded by God.
Today’s Takeaways:
