Communion and Grace Alone

Romans 3:27-4:5

Recap

The doctrine of justification clarifies how a person is made right with God.

People are made right with God, by grace alone, through faith alone, in Christ alone.

Romans 4:1-4:5

Righteousness is credited to us because of faith.

Righteousness is a gift from God.

God gives His righteousness to the one who does not work.

God does not justify good people.  He justifies ungodly people.

Imputed righteousness – God brings righteousness                                                            apart from our effort.

Infused righteousness – God uses our actions as a means                                              to bring righteousness to us.

People’s understanding of justification should guide their church participation and their religious expressions.

Jesus gave two ordinances, baptism and communion, through which the church is to express their faith in Him.

Baptists believe that communion is symbolic, not sacramental.

the purpose of communion

Communion is not observed to appease God.

Communion is not taken to be closer to God.

Christians take communion to remember that grace came to us through Jesus’ sacrificial death.

For as often as you eat this bread and drink the cup,

you proclaim the Lord's death until he comes.

1 Corinthians 11:26
