Biblical Engagement

Hebrews 4:12

Truth:         The word of God intersects every area of                              your life.

Two biblical methods for engaging the Word are personal study and effective teaching.   God has ordained both methods to develop you into the likeness of Christ.

Positive benefits of personal study...

ü Through personal study, you learn to hear the Holy Spirit.

ü There is power in an “Aha” moment.

ü You can study personally 24/7.

Positive benefits of effective teaching...

ü A teacher may have more biblical knowledge than you.

ü Humility is developed through learning from a teacher.

ü A teacher may not be biased to your sin, preference, or history.

Potential pitfalls...

·      A teacher may be idolized.

·      Personal study may yield flawed theology.

·      Personal learning may never develop a depth of knowledge.

·      A student may become too dependent upon the teacher.

·      A teacher may be a persuasive heretic.

For maximum benefit...

ΠYou need consistent exposure.

·      Do not assume complete maturity.

·      Give the Bible to your children.

…you know that from childhood you have known the sacred Scriptures,

which are able to give you wisdom for salvation through faith in Christ Jesus.                                                                        2 Timothy 3:15

·      Start your day with the Bible.

 You need practical application.

·       The majority of Jesus’ teaching dealt with everyday life.

·       The Bible is not a Sunday book.

Ž You need willing obedience.

But be doers of the word and not hearers only, deceiving yourselves.

James 1:22

Fact:  Obedience determines outcome.

Today’s Takeaway

·      Take personal responsibility for your Bible knowledge.

·      Regularly sit under the teaching of the Word of God.

·      Apply what you hear and read to your everyday life.

·      Obey what you have learned.  Life change begins with obedience.
