In the Gospel reading, Jesus placed a child in front of his disciples during their discussions about their selfish ambitions for power and shameless jostling for positions and said ‘Anyone who welcomes one of these little children in my name, welcomes me; and... the one who sent me.’ The child represented humility, simplicity, authenticity and total dependence on God - a direct contrast to what the disciples wanted - obsession with power, success, self-importance. St James in the second reading is very clear on this when he states that: "Wherever you find jealousy and ambition, you find disharmony, and wicked things of every kind being done;...Where do these wars and battles between yourselves first start? Isn’t it precisely in the desires fighting inside your own selves?

Brothers and Sisters we challenged today and everyday to not be afraid to be like little children, for that is the way to inherit the kingdom of God. To not be afraid to be last, for we will be the first. We should not be afraid to be the least and the servant of all, for that is the key to true greatness. Amen
