Brothers and sisters,  in the readings today, we learn about suffering. It is important to understand suffering in the Christian context for 2 main reasons. Firstly, that it is a necessary part of life with Christ. This is true because as disciples of Jesus - followers of Jesus Christ our master, we need to follow his lead. Christ’s life was one of radical obedience and conformity to God’s will. St Paul tells that Christ obeyed through Suffering. Secondly, the Devil uses suffering as an ultimate weapon against Christians. He believes that human beings are weak in the face of suffering and would do anything to avoid suffering. It is for this precise reason that Advent and Lent are assigned by the Church as days of sacrifice, through which our bodies are disciplined not to be enslaved by wants and even needs. So that when temptations or suffering come, we have the strength to endure.

Brothers and sisters let us pray that we will have the courage to deny ourselves, take up our crosses and follow Jesus. That we will be able to deny ourselves in order to put the other first. That we will put our faith in action & alleviate the pain and suffering of our brothers and sisters in need. For St James tells in the second reading that faith without works is dead. Amen.
