"No Officer, I'm not a Professional"

When a sign says "no flash photography", that's easy enough to understand and obey the rules. But what do places mean when they say "no professional photography" and what makes you a professional? When do you take the easy out and when are you giving photographers a bad name? When I'm shooting a snapshot of my wife on vacation, am I considered a professional?
