The Sound of the Salvation Army Brass band in Petersfield

The Salvation Army celebrates 140 years in Petersfield over the coming year.

They are well known for their music and their fellowship band of musicians (a band made up of Salvation Army Soldiers and others) at all kinds of local community events from Farmers' Markets to care homes. 

One famous hymn they play - Be Strong in the Grace of the Lord - was written by Walter Henry Windybank who was in the Petersfield Corps, in the1880s.

Marcus Fairweather and Mike Waddington attended a band practice and spoke to Commander Mike Harris, Seve Field (the band master and cornet player) and members of the band.

They welcome new members too.

Windybanks lyrics include:

Be strong in the grace of the Lord,
For wholehearted service prepare;
Be thoughtful for all who are weak,
And hasten their burdens to share.

Be eager to do and to dare.
