This year's Big Dig is in High Meadow, the public space next to Swan Surgery.
It’s the project of Liss Archaeology and Petersfield Area Historical Society, and runs from Saturday 19 July until Sunday 3 August.
The Mayor, Councilor Chris Paige, turned the first sod for the trench and the public are welcome on Tuesdays and Thursdays, with children's activities and there is an information stand at weekends.
The project's Ann Brooks told us they are following clues that may indicate a Romano-British presence and even older pre-history of Petersfield.
Ann Brooks spoke to Mike Waddington.
