"All Malay people can sing well ah?"
That question has been repeated countless times, as fellow Malay friends and family have fun singing during Karaoke sessions or Wedding events. The stereotype of Malay people singing well has been regarded as natural for them since they are exposed to many "jiwang" love songs, to the wailing guitairs of "rock kapak" songs and to the chirpy dance tunes of "dangdut". These songs, in their unique ways, are commonly known to primarily embrace the concept of love, that runs deep in the Singapore Malay music culture since the turn of the century.
In this episode, we ponder over this passion of singing that is part of the Malay culture and why do Malay people enjoy singing at social gatherings.
"My music is clear, music that coveys the Eastern feeling overtures together with strong Malay vibes."
- Ramli Sarip, "Papa Rock".
