Ian Rosenberg is a First Amendment lawyer whose children became inspired to engage in protest action after the school shooting at Marjory Stoneman Douglas High School. Because of this, Rosenberg found himself in the position of explaining to his kids what their speech protections were and what punitive action their school could take against them if they chose to walk out of school in solidarity with the March for Our Lives protesters. Having already written the book The Fight for Free Speech: Ten Cases That Define Our First Amendment Freedoms, Ian saw the need to develop a resource for younger readers so they could understand their own First Amendment rights. Paired with Eisner nominated artist Mike Cavallaro, the two of them set out to create The Free Speech Handbook: A Practical Framework for Understanding Our Free Speech Protections, a book which Kristian considers to be one of the most important graphic novels published in the past several years. On this episode of the Part-Time Fanboy podcast, Kristian chats with Ian and Mike about how they came together to create the book, how Ian decided which court cases to focus on in the graphic novel, and how Mike challenged himself to draw five pages of day to get the book done.
