Making an effective transition from your current role to the next one will require you to carry out a skills audit. This is where you are looking to see what gaps exist between your current skills and the dream career you are hoping to go for. You carry out a skills audit on what skills you currently have that you can port into the new area you want to explore. This is what Carl Newport refers to as your career capital. The more of your current skills and experience that you can repurpose into your new direction, the better aligned you are going to be in relation to your desired career. In the same vein, when you can uncover what career capital you are bringing along to your new career, the better aligned you will be and the more you can become so good that the sector cannot ignore you.
