Another question I often get asked is “What are your common-sense guide to acing an interview?”

This question does come up in one form or another and I believe it is a legitimate question to ask. The point here is to be ready for your opportunity and take it in a masterful way when your job opportunity shows up.

I will argue that a successful interview happens way before the day of the interview. Acing your interview is largely a matter of ‘mental state’, preparation, and positioning. You may be asking “what do you mean by that?”

First, it requires a kind of preparation that will put you in a state of mind for optimal performance such that you can position yourself for the role that is yours. This pre-supposes that you have rightly match yourself and your skills to the role you are going for, and that you have been shortlisted with a few others for the final selection process.

Most of the time, what determines success is not often the competency in technical or specific skills for the role, rather it is how you approach the interview. To put yourself in the right state of mind, you need a mindset adjustment; you prepare to master your interview skill and you position yourself by employing key tools to execute a successful interview.

So, let us unpack these three dimensions: Mindset, skillset, and toolset for a successful interview.
