March 4, 1990 I was nearly killed in the line of duty. Chapter one is where I tell you the story of Juan Rico and how he nearly murdered me. Have you ever been beaten to death? Well, you'd be dead if you were. I was nearly there and had to make a life and death decision to fight with all my energy or be killed. What were my options? Back in 1990 there was no pepper-spray, no Taser, no impact weapon or baton. Just your hands and gun. I chose not to shoot and kill my assailant. Instead I gave it one more try and lucked out!

The knee strike to the face did it and I was able to take the suspect into custody before passing out from blood loss and exhaustion onto of my would-be-killer. As I look back I was lucky to make it out of my rookie years alive.
