On Valentine’s Day, 1945, the peaceful village of Lower Quinton in Warwickshire was shaken by one of Britain’s most brutal and mysterious murders. Charles Walton, a 74-year-old farm labourer, was found gruesomely slain near Meon Hill—his body pinned to the ground with a pitchfork, his throat slashed by his own billhook. What at first seemed like a horrific act of violence soon spiralled into something stranger. With ritualistic overtones, missing charms, and a long history of folklore surrounding Meon Hill, whispers of witchcraft emerged almost immediately. Scotland Yard’s top detectives were baffled. Was this a crime of superstition and fear—a modern-day witch killing? Or something more calculated and mundane disguised in ritual?.
