In this week’s episode of Next Page, we have the pleasure of interviewing Dr. Lisa Smith, an Author, Psychology Professor, Hypnotherapist and Advocate for Victims of Sexual Assault. April is Sexual Assault Awareness Month and with an American getting sexually assaulted every 68 seconds, 1 out of 6 women in America being victims of attempted or completed rape and 84% of victims being under the age of 18, it’s more important than ever to talk about how we as individuals and a culture can help the fight against sexual victimization. In this episode we learn how Lisa became an advocate, a professor of psychology and an author of adult and children’s books on sexual assault and America’s Rape Culture. We talk about her book “Blaming and Shaming of Defenseless Victims,” which shines the light on the victim blaming culture we live in today and how as a society we protect the powerful, while silencing the victims. Dr. Smith also educates us about the signs of grooming, the myth of stranger danger, and why blame shifting, underreporting and misguided attempts to keep family units together exacerbates and creates opportunities for sexual assault. We break down the different stages of grooming, how to prevent your kids from becoming victims, the power of children’s voices, the #kidstoo movement and how to forgive yourself and move on from experiencing Sexual Assault yourself. Lisa, a practicing hypnotherapist also lets us in on how hypnosis can help those who have repressed sexual trauma, how to tell someone is lying through body language, and how teaching diversity and cultural sensitivity helps to reduce unconscious stereotypes and racism. Thanks to Dr. Lisa Smith, an inspirational advocate against sexual victimization, this episode is FULL of practical information and straight-talk about the victim blaming world we live in today.
