New study on the effects of nuclear war

The United Nations has approved a new study on the effects of nuclear war, the first since 1989. This study, requested by a group of scientific experts, will examine the impacts of a nuclear war on local, regional and global scales, taking into account scientific and social developments over recent decades. The aim is to update knowledge of the effects of these weapons and provide a scientific basis for future policy decisions. The vote on the resolution was not unanimous, with France, Russia and the United Kingdom opposing it, while a majority of states voted in favour. The panel of experts, who will be appointed by the UN Secretary-General, will work during 2025 and 2026, with a final report expected in 2027.
