According to a recent social media update from DC Studios co-head James Gunn, the live-action  movie is still in development but is currently held up by "complexities" that need to be resolved before the project can move forward.

The article explains that these complexities are not creative but legal and related to the character's ownership rights. Static is a character from Milestone Media, an imprint co-founded by Black creators to improve representation in comics, which had a unique publishing and distribution deal with DC Comics.

The core of the issue lies in this arrangement:

  • Milestone retained significant creative control and licensing rights, unlike most characters fully owned by DC.
  • After the death of Milestone co-founder Dwayne McDuffie, his estate became a key rights-holder alongside the other surviving founders.
  • To make a movie, Warner Bros. and DC Studios must successfully negotiate with all parties involved—DC, the Milestone partners, and the McDuffie estate—which has historically been a complicated process.

The project, which was first announced in 2020 with Michael B. Jordan as a producer and Randy McKinnon as the writer, is not canceled. However, Gunn's update confirms that untangling these foundational legal and business issues is the current priority before creative production can truly begin.
