James Gunn, co-head of DC Studios, has confirmed that the timeline of the new DC Universe (DCU) will generally follow the release order of its projects. This means that if Project A is released before Project B, the events of Project A will typically take place before Project B in the DCU's main continuity.

Gunn clarified this on social media (Threads) to reduce potential confusion. The first official project in this new DCU will be the animated series Creature Commandos, followed by the live-action series Waller, with Superman: Legacy being the first feature film.

While the present-day narrative will largely adhere to this release order, Gunn acknowledged that stories could still feature flashbacks or be set in the past. Importantly, this rule applies to the main DCU continuity ("Chapter One: Gods and Monsters") and does not include "Elseworlds" projects like Matt Reeves' The Batman sequel or Todd Phillips' Joker: Folie à Deux, which exist in their own separate universes.

The overall goal is to create a more cohesive and less confusing timeline for fans following the new DCU.
