Chris Columbus, the director of the original Home Alone and its sequel, has called the Disney+ reboot Home Sweet Home Alone a "mistake."
In an interview, Columbus stated that he is not a fan of reboots or remakes of classic films, believing that you can't recreate "lightning in a bottle." He compared the practice to doing a "paint-by-numbers version" of a classic animated film, questioning the point of redoing something that has already been done so well.
He confirmed that he was not involved in the new film and that while the producers were respectful and compensated him, he feels that "the ship has sailed" for him on the franchise. Essentially, he believes the magic of the original Home Alone was a unique moment in time that cannot be replicated.
