Warner Bros. Discovery has announced a new Lord of the Rings movie, The Lord of the Rings: The Hunt for Gollum, with a target release date of 2026. Andy Serkis is set to direct and reprise his role as Gollum, with the original trilogy's creative team—Peter Jackson, Fran Walsh, and Philippa Boyens—producing.

The central question of the article is how Frodo could return, and if Elijah Wood would play him. The "Hunt for Gollum" in Tolkien's lore actually takes place before the events of The Fellowship of the Ring, with Aragorn and Gandalf searching for Gollum. Frodo would not have been involved in this main plot.

However, the article speculates that the film could use a framing device. The story might be told by an older Samwise Gamgee to his children, years after the War of the Ring. This would allow an older Frodo (played by Elijah Wood) to be present at the beginning or end of the film, listening to or reminiscing about the tale with Sam.

This theory is supported by Elijah Wood's previous statements that he would be open to returning to the role, provided it made sense for the character and was done with the right creative team—conditions which this new film meets. The story also naturally opens the door for other original cast members like Viggo Mortensen (Aragorn) and Ian McKellen (Gandalf) to potentially return.
