Austin Butler Says an American James Bond Is ‘Sacrilegious’

In a recent interview, actor Austin Butler definitively took himself out of the running to be the next James Bond, stating that an American playing the iconic British spy would be "sacrilegious."

Butler, whose name has been frequently mentioned as a potential candidate, believes the character is a fundamental "British icon" and should remain so out of respect for Ian Fleming's source material and the franchise's long history.

However, while he has no interest in playing 007 himself, Butler expressed a strong desire to participate in the franchise in another capacity. He enthusiastically stated that he would be "much more interested in playing a villain" in a future Bond film. His comments place him firmly on the side of tradition in the ongoing debate over who will succeed Daniel Craig.
