ARCHIE Movie in the Works, Phil Lord and Chris Miller Producing

Years before the TV show Riverdale existed, a live-action Archie movie was in development with a high-profile creative team. The film was set to be produced by Phil Lord and Chris Miller (The LEGO Movie, Spider-Verse), directed by Adam McKay (The Big Short), and written by Roberto Aguirre-Sacasa, who would later create Riverdale.

The core concept was a meta, coming-of-age portal fantasy. The plot would have involved the modern-day Archie and his friends discovering a portal that transported them to the idealized, wholesome 1950s world of the classic comics. There, they would have met and clashed with their original, more innocent counterparts. The film was described as being similar in tone to movies like Pleasantville and Back to the Future.

Ultimately, the project fell apart at Warner Bros. After the rights reverted to Archie Comics, the writer, Roberto Aguirre-Sacasa, pivoted the concept to television, which eventually led to the creation of the much darker and more dramatic series, Riverdale.
