According to an interview with showrunner Beau DeMayo and director Jake Castorena, the finale of X-Men '97 originally had a different ending that would have introduced two iconic mutants: Kitty Pryde and Colossus.

In this scrapped version, instead of being sent to the distant future with Mother Askani, Jean Grey and Cyclops would have landed in the dystopian "Days of Future Past" timeline. There, they would have met older, grizzled versions of Kitty Pryde and Colossus, officially introducing them into the series to set them up as main characters for Season 2.

The creative team ultimately changed this because they felt introducing these major characters in the final moments would be "too much of a sugar rush" and would detract from the emotional weight of the team's separation. They decided the Mother Askani reveal was a more mysterious and intriguing cliffhanger.

Despite the change, the creators confirmed that Kitty Pryde and Colossus are still planned to be major characters in Season 2, but they will be introduced in a way that feels more "earned" rather than as a last-minute finale surprise.
