Today’s quickie was inspired by a conversation I was having with my boyfriend’s daughter. She asked me how much money I make and through answering her many questions both openly and honestly, I realized that these were not the type of conversations I was having when I was a little girl … and not even when I was a teenage girl for that matter! I was lucky enough to have had many incredible people and mentors in my life growing up, so it’s not as though the support wasn’t there, however, we certainly never talked about the type of life I wanted to live, the career I wanted to have, or the type of people I wanted to have in my life. You know ... all of the really practical things that help us get through real life! But it sparked an interesting thought, how can we know how much we can strive for and what the possibilities are in this world if we never talk about it? We have a job as a society to educate our younger generation so that they can grow up knowing these things and keep dreaming big. School children have the support of guidance counsellors to mentor them through early career and life choices, but this information can, unfortunately, come from a skewed perspective if the child doesn’t have perfect grades in one area or another. It is false information if we are telling a child that they cannot do something simply because their grades don’t reflect their desires; a more reasonable approach would be to talk to the child about why they want that thing and how they might start getting there. It’s important that instead of telling our children what they can or cannot have and who they can or can be, that we give them the tools and the knowledge that with committed effort, they can be, do, or have anything they desire in this life. Are you having these types of conversations with your children? With your friends? With your family? … Or how about with yourself? And, are you doing what you need to be doing to get there? You see, achieving all that you ever dreamed of doesn’t come from hard work. It comes from truly believing in yourself and believing in the voice inside your head that says you deserve to have it all, and you can have it all. Without the belief that you can achieve something, you will never get there. You must first believe, to achieve. As children grow, by society's standards, they start to lose their imagination and become more practical and by the book. But imagine a world where a child’s limitless imagination continued to know that anything was possible into and throughout their adulthood. Think about what they could achieve for themselves. Think about the difference they could make in this world knowing that anything they dreamed was possible. It's magical. Help create the magic in your own little's lives, they are the ones who have the power to change the world.
