Hi there! My name is Kathleen McGiveron and you’re listening to the Ms Artastic Podcast and today I’m going to dive in on the topic of Social Emotional Learning and how you can teach it through art. Before we begin, let’s understand what Social Emotional Learning, or SEL is and what it can look like in the art classroom or through art! SEL (Social Emotional Learning) is a process that both kids and adults can understand and use to manage their emotions, set goals, feel and show empathy towards others, and learn social awareness and socializing skills to allow them to build relationships. The five core competencies of SEL are: Self-awareness (recognize one’s emotions and understand how it influences behavior), Self-management (the ability to regulate one’s emotions and behaviors in different situations), Social awareness (the ability to take perspectives and empathize with people from culturally diverse backgrounds), Relationship skills (the ability to develop and maintain healthy relationships with people and groups of diverse backgrounds), and Responsible decision-making (the ability to make respectful choices based on personal behavior and social interactions and care for the well-being of self and others).
