Here we have another insightful and poignant episode with the wonderful human that is Laura W. Laura is a leading volunteer behind the Nipple Innovation Project (Nip) charity and has a very unique story to share. Laura first experienced a rare cancer as an infant, developing Sarcoma of the uterus. After growing up not expecting to have any cancer recurrence, she then went on to not only develop another rare form of cancer but the journey of her cancer was a very atypical one which led her on a long road to emotionally come to terms with her experience. Laura experienced ovarian cancer, more specifically a Sertoli-Leydig Cell Tumour on one of her ovaries, which is a germ cell cancer. Although she had subtle symptoms of ovarian cancer (which are commonly missed because of their subtlety), her lack of periods and gut instinct pushed her to have a scan. a 7cm tumour was found but the expected cancer tumour markers were not raised. Laura went into surgery and the build up repeatedly being reassured it was unlikely to be cancer. When Laura was finally diagnosed, she was at the same time already cured and received the required treatment. Laura shares with us the emotional journey that then pursued; how the absence of chemotherapy and the expected 'cancer journey' made it difficult to find acceptance. This is a really poignant story of how important it is not to compare one's journey of cancer or any medical problem with anyone else; that everything is all relative. Laura turned her experienced into a life changing positive when it put her on a path of volunteering where she found her calling in life and place within the Nip charity. We loved interviewing Laura and are proud to have her share such a unique story with us as one of our Voices in the Scars of Gold campaign.
